Information sessions for ET-NGF calls for ET-R&D projects.
24-01-2024 - 04-09-2024
24 January 2024 Vibration isolation
The state-of-the-art vibration isolation used in Virgo and LIGO is still several orders of magnitude below the aim for ET. Who can help improve the attenuators, sensors levels, actuators, active and passive concepts, and the overall vibration isolation system?
28 February 2024 Optics
ET needs perfect mirrors: perfectly flat on the reflecting surface, perfectly homogeneous where the beam is supposed to go through the mirror. Because of the resonator cavity any imperfection will be resonated a hundred times. Who can help crate the (silicon) mirrors, shape them, coat them, measure them, understand the propagation of distortions due to imperfections or pollution on the mirrors, or in the beam path?
27 March 2024 Thermal deformations
Thermal Deformations happens when the high-power laser beam hits the mirror. Some watts of power are dissipated and absorbed in the optical elements, resulting in temperature gradients. Light passes through, but also some light bounces off and will generate a diffusing effect. (This depends on how much light impinges on the optical elements and how much is absorbed, based also on the quality of the glass) This is the Thermal Deformation we are talking about. We need a Thermal Compensation System (TCS). Everything is connected. Who can help us understand what happens and correct for it by improving the systems we already have in use?
4 September 2024 Vacuum Pipe
ET is designed to operate three systems of a room temperature and a cryogenic interferometer with 10 km length arms. Thus over 120 km of vacuum pipe of 1 m diameter. The current design by CERN favours a corrugated pipe for which a mass production system does not exist yet. Who can help us design this in the most economic and most sustainable and durable (>50 years of operation) way?
There were also follow-up workshops to provide more detailed information and help shape consortia to propose projects in these calls.
