The SPIE Astronomical Telescopes + Instrumentation conference is unparalleled as the global gathering for the international community of researchers, suppliers, and programme managers of large ground- and space-based telescopes. More than 2,500 papers are presented in 12 conferences, including a new track in radio astronomy joining long-running tracks on ground-based and space borne telescopes and instrumentation, interferometry and imaging, detectors, adaptive optics, observatory operations and other topics.

A two-day exhibition features 115 companies and institutes showcasing their latest technologies and systems, including devices and components for large ground-based telescopes and instruments, astronomy information technologies, space telescopes and instruments, detectors, and specialized optics materials and systems.

The Netherlands were very present at this conference in Edinburgh, Scotland (UK). Over 100 scientific papers were presented by SRON, ASTRON, TNO, NOVA and its universities. On top of that ESA ESTEC, based in Noordwijk (NL), presented a large number of papers. There was also a Holland Pavillion at the Exhibition, showcasing the latest technologies by SRON, ASTRON, TNO and NOVA, as well as participating companies such as: Janssen Precision Engineering , VDL-ETG, Cosine, Technology of Sense and MA3 Solutions.

ASTRON showed its latest developments on the low cost solutions for RF over Fiber applications for the SKA. Rafaella Morganti gave a plenary about radio astronomy and the exciting times made possible by technology developments. Jan Geralt Bij de Vaate held two poster presentations about the SKA CSP and the LFAA.

NOVA showed its achievements on the development of the Freeform Active Mirror Element (FAME), built as part of the OPTICON 7th framework programme.

SRON was very well represented with contributions, both in the exhibition and in the conference programme, to the ATHENA x-ray mission, and the SPICA mission, which will be proposed for the M5 selection in ESA'S Cosmic Vision programme. Significant contributions were also given to the conference topics on detector development.

De twee jaarlijkse SPIE  wordt dit keer in Europa gehouden. Edinburgh is het middelpunt van de wereld als het gaat om Instrumentatie voor Astronomische waarneming. Een flinke Nederlandse delegatie zal in een Holland Paviljoen op de Industriebeurs van het congres vertegenwoordigd zijn.  Dit is alweer de derde keer sinds in 2012 de SPIE Amsterdam aandeed dat Nederland een bedrijven missie organiseert. De vorige SPIE was in Ottawa, Canada. De verslagen van die eerder edities zijn elders op de BS-site te vinden

Naast de instituten ASTRON, NOVA, SRON en TNO hebben de volgende bedrijven zich op dit moment aangemeld:

• Cosine B.V. (Warmond –  Wetenschappelijke meetsystemen)
• VDL-ETG (Eindhoven – Mechanische vervaardigingstechnologieën met extreme toleranties)
• Janssen Precision Engineering (Maastricht – Precisie-actuatoren en meetsystemen)
• Technology of Sense B.V. (Enschede – Geavanceerde technologie voor cleanrooms)
• MA3 Solutions (Eindhoven – Optische fibers en micro-assemblage)

Daarnaast behartigt Wilfried Boland als ILO voor ESO ook de belangen van bedrijven die niet in staat zijn fysiek aanwezig te zijn.

De vorige edities van het Holland Pavilion werden mede mogelijk gemaakt door een subsidie van MIT en het ILO-NET
