EPIC Technology Meeting on Photonics for NewSpace – Optical communication

Adjacent to the ESA Industry Space Days (ISD), EPIC (European Photonics Industry Consortium) organized a Technology Meeting on Photonics for NewSpace: Optical communication. This exclusive event focused on the forefront of NewSpace, with a dedicated emphasis on optical communication. The event started with a pre-event networking dinner, an excellent way to discuss matters in a relaxed environment. Several companies from The Netherlands were present: Bright Photonics, Demcon Focal, Lionix, Molenaar Optics, Single Quantum, Tiny Telescope and TNO. The event itself contains two sessions.
1: Technology Challenges and Roadmap for New Space – Optical Communication
In this first session, end-users and system integrators discussed their evolving needs in new space, with a specific focus on optical communication. This session provided valuable insights into the demands and expectations from the industry. The session also touched upon the pragmatic aspects of “doing business with ESA,” offering valuable insights into collaboration opportunities and best practices for navigating the ESA ecosystem.
2: Solution Providers for New Space Challenges
In this dynamic session, companies in the field of new space optical communication showcased their innovative solutions, ranging from quantum key distribution (QKD) to advanced optical components, incuding laser alignement sensors, free space optics, filters and coatings, and PICs, tailored for the unique challenges of space-based applications – and especially for optical communication. This session is interesting for its cutting-edge optical communication technologies, as well as for its opportunities to collaborate with end-users of the space field. It provided a comprehensive overview of the latest advancements and opportunities in the new space optical communication landscape.
