HFML-FELIX

HFML-FELIX is a renowned national research institute, located in Nijmegen, the Netherlands. The institute houses high-field magnets and free-electron lasers that enable scientists from all over the world to expose matter to extreme conditions and drive it into previously inaccessible states and phases. It is also the only lab in the world where these two techniques can be combined, making it a unique research facility. You can read more about the instruments here.

The experiments that take place at HFML-FELIX contribute to a number of research fields, including medicine, astronomy, material science and the energy transition. For instance, by enabling the early detection of diseases, revealing the secrets of interstellar atmospheres, or finding and studying novel materials with promising new characteristics like graphene.

As of 2025, the lab is part of a large national collaboration, consisting of seven Dutch universities and NWO (the Dutch Research Council).
